Diving in Laoag
There is more to Laoag than just Pagudpud beach, and in fact there are several dive sites in and around the city. The following is a rundown of the diving centers you can take pleasure in.
Natba Island
Aside from the fact that Natba Island is less than 10 minutes from the airport, there are other reasons why this ranks as one of the most beautiful Laoag dive sites around.
The beauty of Natba Island is manifold, as the area provides a good view for sunsets and sunrises. The sands, which are of a silvery shade, are unique and are smooth to the touch. The view from beneath the island is gorgeous, with several types of eagle rays, snappers and sea fans populating the seascape.
Badoc Island
Badoc Island is another area where you can go diving in Laoag. About 40 km away from the city, it is primarily known as a surfing spot although there is more to it than that.
This Laoag dive site features several types of marine life, including soldier fish, tuna, mackerel and parrot fish. The various types of plants in and around the Badoc Island make it a suitable area for underwater photography too. After diving you can also spend your time strolling along the island.
Currimao
Local and foreign tourists are coming in great numbers at Currimao, as it houses several popular beach fronts and dive sites.
Some of the most popular resorts here are D Coral Beach Resort and the Old Fishermans Beach Resort. Besides providing amenities and accommodations, diving is a prime feature of the area. There are several coral reefs in the sea, not to mention a variety of nudibranch, gorgonians, and several fish. The local residents in fact, fish in some areas of the beach, owing to the proliferation of the species here.
Malingay Cove
The journey to reach Malingay Cove, or the Blue Lagoon, can be difficult, but the rewards are its azure waters, blue skies and white sands.
Located at Maira-ira Point, you will have to go by the highway and onto dirt roads and paths before you reach Sitio Malingay, where this Laoag dive site is found. However, any weariness you may have experienced will disappear once you plunge into its waters and see the treasures within. The multicolored fish frolicking around the cove will fascinate you, and the vistas afforded are mesmerizing.
Don Hermanos Islands
Also at Sitio Malingay are the Don Hermanos Islands. Accessible by boat, these islands are noted as much for the fascinating landscapes as their underwater attractions.
There are several underwater caves in this Laoag dive site. Exploring those areas will reveal several types of tropical fish swimming along. There are also a lot of seaweed here, especially by the Don Hermanos Rocks, whose rugged features are enticing in their own right.
Nipa Beach
This Laoag dive site already has several beach resorts around it, testament to its popularity. While recognized as a prime destination for swimming, it is also a good place to go scuba diving.
The waters around Nipa Beach feature several types of rocks and walls, where various kinds of fish can be found. Apart from diving you can also enjoy resting at the palm trees around the site. Also, do not miss the opportunity to relish the gorgeous sunsets here, which are best enjoyed with a cool drink in hand.
Laoag dive sites may not be as widely known as that of the other Philippine diving centers, but their beauty is on par with other beaches and shoals. When you visit Laoag, dont forget to visit one (or all) of these sites, and come face to face with some of natures finest creations.
